Church History

On 30 July 1846 what is now called the Old Church was opened as a result of the generosity of Mr Charles Scott Murray. Scott Murray was one of the members of the Tractarian movement in Oxford and on his becoming a Catholic in 1844 was reported as being the eighteenth convert to Catholicism under John Henry Newman, who later became a cardinal.

The Old Church was designed by Augustus Welby Pugin and built by George Myers of Hull.

The New Church was designed by Mr Francis Pollen, built by Hugh Murray and Sons, Ltd. and opened on 29 July 1970. It was financed by a loan which was subsequently repaid through parish fund-raising.
